HORSES FOR COURSES, TEACUPS AND SAUCERS

Friday 11th March - Friday 1st April 2011

Artist collaboration between Rachael Allen and Juli Watson

Experienced artist Allen and fledgling artist Watson bring together their passions, visions and creativity to present an art trail of site-specific artworks in a handful of public places within Heaton.

Facilitated and funded by Newcastle Brown Ale through Charles Street Community Association (reg. charity 1010376), the artworks were displayed in the following venues:

Cock A Snook Tattoo Parlour, 5 Coast Road

Jack Sprats Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurant & Cafe, 413 Chillingham Road

Butterfly Cabinet Cafe, 178 Heaton Road

Arthur T.Sharpe's Tattoo Emporium, 192a Heaton Road

Heaton Perk Coffee Shop, 103-105 Heaton Park Road

Allen's work often beautifully explores the world of comparative size and scale: the arresting blend of the uncanny with the everyday. For Horses for Courses… she has produced a series of adapted, mutated miniature toy horses that display unique, quirky characteristics unusually seen in the context of the universal child’s toy.

Watson's work centres on replicating common or garden objects in unusual mediums, using a range of mixed media, taking an unusual, playful and occasionally provocative twist. For …Teacups and Saucers she has produced a series of alternative takes on the traditional cup and saucer; inspired by and including homages to notable artists' work.

The celebration of variation is an overall theme in Allen and Watson's collaboration, inviting the viewer to embrace the differences that make us all individual and to recognise this as essential in today's ever more conformist society. Allen and Watson offer a glimpse into their world of 'misfits' and maybes.
